چکیده

Detailed post-mortem investigations including the auditory pathway are needed to advance our understanding of how underwater noise and other stressors affect hearing in cetaceans. A 12-year-old female porpoise ( Phocoena phocoena ) stranded alive June 2021 at German Baltic Sea coast died some hours later. The most significant pathological findings were lesions caused by a severe aspergillosis that spread from lung pulmonary lymph node cerebellum. Based on molecular sequencing, fungus was identified as Aspergillus fumigatus. Severe pyogranulomatous necrotizing inflammation diagnosed associated node. In left part cerebellum, focal, purulent meningoencephalitis with intralesional fungal structures confirmed histologically. addition, multifocal, severe, chronic, granulomatous, eosinophilic gastritis parasite found stomach. Parallel stripes (linear skin markings) detected along caudal both body sides, which have not been previously described for harbor porpoises. Inner ear analysis revealed evidence focal loss outer hair cells several regions 120 580 µm apex right cochlea using immunofluorescence. low-frequency impairment compatible noise-induced loss. This is first case concurrent presumptive unrelated free-ranging porpoise.

Respiratory properties of blood in the harbor porpoise, Phocoena phocoena.

Harbor porpoises are active divers that exchange O(2) and CO(2) with the environment during a fast single breath upon surfacing. We investigated blood O(2)-transporting properties, buffer characteristics, Cl(-) transport via the erythrocyte anion exchanger (AE1), circulating nitric oxide metabolites and hemoglobin nitrite reduction in harbor porpoises with the aim to evaluate traits that are ad...

Temporary hearing threshold shift in a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) after exposure to multiple airgun sounds.

In seismic surveys, reflected sounds from airguns are used under water to detect gas and oil below the sea floor. The airguns produce broadband high-amplitude impulsive sounds, which may cause temporary or permanent threshold shifts (TTS or PTS) in cetaceans. The magnitude of the threshold shifts and the hearing frequencies at which they occur depend on factors such as the received cumulative s...

Brucella ceti Infection in Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)

We describe Brucella sp. infection and associated lesions in a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the coast of Belgium. The infection was diagnosed by immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, and bacteriology, and the organism was identified as B. ceti. The infection's location in the porpoise raises questions of abortion and zoonotic risks.

HARBOR PORPOISE (Phocoena phocoena): Northern California/Southern Oregon Stock

STOCK DEFINITION AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE In the Pacific, harbor porpoise are found in coastal and inland waters from Point Conception, California to Alaska and across to Kamchatka and Japan (Gaskin 1984). Harbor porpoise appear to have more restricted movements along the western coast of the continental U.S. than along the eastern coast. Regional differences in pollutant residues in harbor porpois...
